Ruđer Bošković Institute
The Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) is the largest multidisciplinary research institute in the Republic of Croatia. By virtue of its scale, scientific productivity, international standing, and the quality of its staff and equipment, it serves as the country’s leading institution in the natural and biomedical sciences, as well as in marine and environmental research. Today, the RBI comprises 11 Divisions and 4 Centers. Its valuable infrastructure includes a workforce of over 1,000 employees—around 800 of whom are scientists and researchers, and major research equipment worth approximately €30 million.
The Institute is currently running more than 200 competitive national and international research projects, with a European project portfolio of about €140 million, thereby taking a leading role in Croatia in securing funding from EU programmes. In parallel, the RBI maintains a strong tradition of science communication and public engagement through coordinated outreach initiatives, including open days, school and community programmes, partnerships with festivals, media and policy engagement, and support for researchers in communicating their work—helping to inspire future scientists and foster an informed public.
Representation of the European Commission in Croatia
The European Commission Representation in Croatia serves as the Commission’s official presence in the country. It supports cooperation between Croatia and the President of the European Commission, and fosters sustained political dialogue with national, regional and local authorities, parliaments, social partners, academia, civil society and other stakeholders. The Representation prepares visits by Members of the College and senior Commission officials—and, where relevant, officials of the European External Action Service.
It represents the Commission in Croatia and communicates about the EU through the media and social networks, maintaining direct contact with national, regional and local outlets and journalists, and acting as their primary liaison point. The office engages with citizens, universities, civil society, social partners and wider stakeholders, organising communication activities, dialogues and other information initiatives on EU priorities and policies, including the Conferences on the Future of Europe. The Representation also briefs the President and the Commission on developments in Croatia, providing analysis and advice on political, economic and social trends to help shape EU policymaking and strategic communication. Its work is supported by the Europe Direct centres, which provide information and facilitate engagement with citizens at regional and local levels across the EU.
